Gateway to Spring

As we arrive in Spring, our attention turns towards spending more time outdoors. If you’re going to be moving livestock, welcoming visitors, or just need better access for transport and machinery, having the right access points is vital.

But there are so many different types of gates to choose from! We’ve put together a little list of some of the different options when it comes to function and materials, and their pros and cons.

Function

  • Field gates are designed for wide access, usually for machinery and vehicles. Often with five or seven horizontal bars they can be made from timber or metal. Long-lasting and durable, they’re a simple solution when it comes to adding an extra level of security.

  • Similar to field gates, livestock gates come with the addition of half or full mesh. They will generally be metal to ensure strength, and can be engineered with thicker steel for larger livestock such as cattle.

  • There are lots of options when it comes to pedestrian gates, including self-closing or kissing gates. Your requirements will vary depending on any additional needs - such as excluding livestock or being on a bridleway, so it’s worth doing some research on this one.

Materials

  • Metal is durable, weather-resistant, and low maintenance. It can’t be chewed by livestock, and is great for high-traffic areas. They can be incredibly heavy so a strong structure will be required to hold them up, and noise could be an issue if it’s regularly being opened and closed.

  • Timber can be a more affordable option, and for a natural setting more aesthetically pleasing. Wooden gates are generally quieter in operation, and can allow for smaller repairs to be made as necessary. They will require more regular maintenance to keep them looking their best, and might not be secure enough for larger livestock.
